George Sweet Home (1840), 32345 Detroit Road, Avon, Ohio

Home (Main Menu)

This description is based on information
compiled by the Avon Historical Society.

The Sweet Home is of Greek Revival architecture with the familiar two-storied main house with a one-story wing. The main house has six spacious rooms and a beautiful open stairway with large halls on both floors. Some of the walls are as thick as eight or ten inches. Foundation beams are logs 16 inches by 20 inches thick; some still have the bark on them.

Pride of the house is the front entrance-way and stairwell. The recessed door, framed by panelled windows at top and sides, opens into the wide hallway with the stairwell facing it. The newel post is gracefully turned, and tapered spindels are notched into the rail and treads. This is a classic design maintained in spectacular condition.
