    Wed Sept 7, 2014 AVON HISTORICAL SOCIETY MINUTES

    President Ralph White called the Sept 7, 2014 meeting of the Avon Historical Society to order at 7:05 p.m. The minutes of the May 7, 2014 were approved as read with Jack Smith making the motion and Jim Szippl seconding.

    13 members were present.

    Treasurer Christine White reported a balance of $5,648.97 in the checking account. Special mention was made of $ 201 deposits made from summer speaking engagements, material sales, and proceeds from donated items for sale during Aunt Teak and Uncle Junk.

    In old business:

    Election of officers was tabled till the September meeting.

    Ralph White spoke of different summer events: donation of the Miller wedding photo, Aunt Teak and Uncle Junk sale, Garden Club gift for flag cleaning, Class of '59 reunion gift.

    In new business:

    Jim Szippl made a motion to nominate officers. Joanne Easterday resigned as Secretary. Ralph White was nominated as President and Christine White as Treasurer/Secretary. The position of Vice-President was left open. The motion was passed. Trustees remain the same: Bob Gates, Bill Furnace and Jim Szippl.

    2014-15 Membership drive is underway. Theresa Szipplemailed notices and will follow up with a second letter in October and a third in November. New dues structure of $8 for individuals, $10 for couples and $15 for families was implemented. To date, there were 34 responses collecting $482 in dues and donations.

    Matt Smith spoke of the history walk. Mayor Jensen has agreed to pay for the signs with a tentative budget of $10,000. The number of signs and topics are yet to be determined. $1400 was paid by the city for a sign of Dr. Norton Townshend to be displayed at the gazebo the end of September. This will be mounted on a pedastal under protective plastic. There will be a donation ceremony, date and time to be announced.

    Ralph White spoke of the Landmarks Preservation Commission's May meeting. A demolition permit was granted for the house on the Avondale golf course property that has been purchased by Ryan Homes.

    Jack Smith spoke of the Bicentennial activities. The Old Town Hall of 1871 will be open Sat Sept 6 at 11:00 and Sunday Sept 7 at noon. Jean Fischer, Rose Mitock, Don Brodke, and Jack will be at the OTH various times throughout the day. At 3:00 pm a time capsule will be dug up that is buried at Centennial Plaza and brought to the OTH to be displayed until Sunday September 14, 2014

    Jean Fischer will conduct an open house of the Wilbur Cahoon Home on Sunday Sept 14 for the commemmoration of the Bicentennial. 4 volunteers are requested to assist. Jack Smith will be at the Town Hall from 2-4 pm.

    Saturday October 18 is the Lorain County Preservation Network Expo to be held at Avon Isle for all Lorain County historical societies. Jack Smith will organize and prepare a display for AHS.

    The meeting was adjourned with Susie Cory making the motion and Carol Smith seconding.

    The next meeting of the Avon Historical Society will be held at 7 pm on Wednesday, 10-1-14, at the Old Town Hall of 1871, southeast corner of Detroit and Stoney Ridge. Presentation yet to be determined.

    Lorain County Preservation Network Expo - October 18, 2014, 11 am to 3 pm, at the Avon Isle

    The Lorain County Preservation Network is hosting an Exposition of preservation activities going on across Lorain County on October 18, 2014, 11 am to 3 pm at the Avon Isle, 36080 Detroit Road, Avon, Ohio.

    This event is free and open to the public.

    We are expecting exhibits from Amherst, Avon, Avon Lake, Elyria, Lorain, Oberlin and Sheffield Village. Some of the communities will have multiple exhibits. Lois Shinko is planning an extensive display of Avon memorabilia.

    Winners will be announced at Avon Isle at 3:30 on October 18, 2014, immediately after the Lorain County Preservation Network Expo. Trims during September and October are free at the shop. Event is free. Please come and check out the beards! Prizes will be awarded.

    9-21-14 Sunday Bicentennial Church Tour amd meeting (10-1-14) of the Avon Historical Society

    On Sunday September 21, 2014, from 1-3 pm

  • Hope Christian Church (32575 Detroit Rd),

  • Avon Church of God (37445 Detroit Rd) and

  • Faith Lutheran Church (2265 Garden Dr)

    will hold an open house in honor of Avon's Bicentennial. Please come and visit the churches.

    You can go at your own pace to any of the listed churches for a tour. There is no charge.

    Avon's Bicentennial of 2014 is also a Sesquicentennial year of the Civil War.
