6. Sketches of Sauk County by William H. Canfield, Page 43: Enlisted in the Revolutionary army when sixteen years of age and served during the war.

He participated in Shays' rebellion and for this reason and others he left Massachusetts. He was liberal in his religious beliefs and after fighting in the army for liberty he did not want to pay a religion tax nor be restricted in his religious beliefs.

He eventually was ostracized under the blue laws as a heretic and an infidel. He moved to Willsborough, N. Y., where he remained untill 1822 or 1823, when he took his family to Ohio, which was then very sparsely settled.

7. Newspaper Article, LORAIN COUNTY RESEARCHER Winter 1995 Vol. 12 , Issue 1 Page 9-10 "Joseph Moore, Avon's Revolutionary War Veteran", The only veteran of the Revolutionary War buried in Avon Lake or Avon is Joseph Moor ( also spelled More and Moore) an early settler along the lake shore.

His early life is not well known, but from his pension application we learn that he was born in Southwick (then Westfield), Hampden County, MA, in 1764. At the age of 17 Joseph went to West Point and enlisted in the Rev. Army for three years.

He was assigned to the Captain Amos Cogswell's Co. in the Third Regiment of the MA line. He served for almost the full term of his enlistment, being discharged at West Point on 17 Dec 1783.

Some time in 1784 or 1785 Joseph Moor married Hannah Miller and they began their married life probably in Hampshire Co., at least five or six of their eleven children gave MA as their birthplace. The family then moved to upper NY state where Joseph made his first pension application from Willsborough, Essex Co., in 1818.

His two oldest sons, Theron and Norman, Had left for Ohio in 1817, and had settled at what became Avon township in Lorain Co., and Joseph followed with the rest of the family in 1819.

The first land purchases were probably recorded in Cleveland as that part of Lorain Co. was attached to Cuyahoga Co. until 1822, and deeds here do not begin until 1824.

On 15 March 1830 Norman and Joseph Moore bought a tract in Avon Twp. Lot 18 at the Lake Erie due north of the eighteen mile tree on the road laid in the year 1810 from Cleveland, thence westerly along the Lake shore, thence running south from said Lake one mile, thence east fifty rods, thence north to the shore of Lake Erie and said lines to be parallel.

This property lay on the east side of the present Avon-Belden Road being a strip 825 feet wide and one mile long. The next year they sold the tract to Levi Moore (son and brother) for $400. Joseph and Hannah (Miller) Moore raised eleven children and left something over 72 grandchildren. Chapter member Frank A. Nesbit, a descendant, has compiled what is known

8. (Newspaper Article continued), of these children and grandchildren, and is searching for addditions and corrections. An outline of his work will be carried in our next issue. Meanwhile he can be reached at 312 Elm St., South Amherst, OH 44001.

He eventually was ostrasized under the blue laws as a heretic and an infide. He moved to Willsborough, NY where he remained until 1822 or 23, when he took his family to OH.

16. Court Record, Cuyahoga Co., OH, Court of Common Pleas 7 Nov 1821, Joseph Moore speaking, " I have a wife aged fifty seven years, very feeble and almost Blind. Two children, one boy aged fifteen years, one daughter aged twel years, who are unable to do much."

21. Henry R. Tinman, 3985 Medusa Road, Norwalk, Oh 44857, Letter dated September 17, 1984, I have enclosed a copy of the 1819 personal property tax list of Huron County which then included what is now Sandusky County. Sandusky County was established as a separate county in 1820. this 1819 tax list shows both Theron Moore and Joseph Moore in Croghan Township of what is now Sandusky County.

Croghan Township was the area west of the Huron-Erie County line to what is the east bank of the Sandusky River, so Theron was living somewhere between Bellevue and Fremont, if you look on the present map. He paid tax on 2 horses and 6 cows, while Joseph Moore paid tax on 1 horse and 6 cows.

I don't have access to the 1820 tax list for Sandusky County here in Norwalk, but I preseume it exists in Fremont. I did notice that Theron wasn't in the index to the 1820 Ohio census, so perhaps he had left this area after his wife died and was in New York state again.

You may have already seen the History of Sandusky County by H. Z. Williams and Brother in 1882. This quotes (and I forgot to note the page number) that the 1822 tax list of York township in Sandusky County carries that name of "Thesion Moore"..I presume this is a misprint of Theron's name.

I did not find any land records for Theron in Huron County, but since he lived in what is now Sandusky County, any land records would be in Fremont from 1820 and after. I doubt that he owned land here, though, since the majority of early settlers were renters or squatters and didn't buy land.

The early marriage records of Huron County in the Probate Court ( Vol. 1, p11) show the marriage of Theron Moore to Clarissa Gray on 9 Aug 1819, by Lot B. Sullivan, minister of the Gospel. Rev. Sullivan had charge of the Lyme Church were you first wrote, but Theron is not mentioned in the records there. I presume he and Clarissa west to Rev. Sullivan to be married since he was close by.

24. Henry R. Tinman, 3985 Medusa Road, Norwalk, Oh 44857, Letter dated September 17, 1984, Unless someone put up a monument for Theron's wife in later years I doubt that you'll ever find a record of her burial in Sandusky County. It was still frontier in 1818-10, and few graves were ever marked. As a matter of fact, matter of fact, many burials were close by the cabin in the woods.

25. Henry R. Tinman, 3985 Medusa Road, Norwalk, Oh 44857, Letter dated September 17, 1984, Even though Theron lived in what is now Sandusky County he would have gotten his marriage license in Norwalk, since Huron County had jurisdiction over the area until 1820.

26. Henry R. Tinman, 3985 Medusa Road, Norwalk, Oh 44857, Letter, The early marriage records of Huron Co. in the Probate Court ( Vol. 1, p11) show the marriage of Theron Moore to Clarrisa Gray on 9 Aug 1819, by Lot B. Sullivan, minister of the Gospel. Rev. Sullivan had charge of the Lyme Church.

27. Internet, Daphne Gawne, I just got an email from Laurie Kennedy who says she is descended from Lucetta Moore and says that Lucetta is buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo, WI and that Theron, Sr. is also buried there!

28. Internet, Kevin Williams, kevinw@xta.com, 8-30-01, I have been searching for Theron's burial place as well but I'm afraid that there is no marker and that we never will find it. My best guess would be that he is buried in Evergreen Cem., in Lavalle Twp., Sauk co., but this would only be a guess. I believe he died in the early 1860's because he is in the 1860 census in Sauk Co., WI and Louisa remariied in 1865.

138. Newspaper Article, Obituary- 1877 Lorain Co., Ohio Newpaper "Another Pioneer Gone", Thus one by one the pioneer fathers are passing away and soon they will all be numbered with the past.

In the death of Mr. Theron Moore we loose another of the old settlers of Lorain Co., Mr. Moore started for the Michigan pineries on his annual deer hunting excursion. When he arrived at Detroit he found a friend who was to accompany him not able to go and not feeling well he concluded to return home with his son, Captain Menzies Moore, on the Vessel Theo. Voges.

He went forward and helped heave anchor. Said he was chilly and did not feel very well; then walked aft and sat down on the main hatch, and immediately expired without a word or a struggle.

This occurred about 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning, Nov 28th. After going ashore and telegraphing home Captain Menzies Moore proceed on his voyage with his father's remains, and arrived at the port of Black River about 1 o'clock that night.

The remains were immediately removed to his home, from which he had so recently started out in such buoyant spirits and vigorus health. His funeral obsequies were attended by a large concourse of neighbors and citizens; although the day was cold and storymy, yet many old people testified their respect by following the remains to their last long resting place.

Captain Theron Moore was born at Willsboroug, Essex Co., Ny Oct 8, 1810 and consequently was 67 years of age at the time of his death. His father, with his family moved to Oh in 1818, when all was a wilderness and settled at Bellevue, in Huron Co., where his mother died.

They then returned to New York State, and again they came to Ohio in 1823, and settled in Avon this country. Here Theron Moore was married in 1833, and settled in Sheffield in 21839, in which township he lived until his death. He raised a large family of children, who with the wife and mother, remain to mourn his loss.

139. Newspaper Article, Obituary continued, He was a man of untiring energy and perseverance;was a kind-hearted neighbor, public-spirited, a good citizen, and greatly devoted to his family. He was always first and foremost in relieving the wants of the sick or those in distress--a man who will for a long time be missed by the entire community.

282. Newspaper Article, Obituary, On Friday afternoon, John Faragher, a farmer residing between Randall's Grove and Lorain, was driving home when, nearing the outskirts of town (Elyria) on Lake Avenue, his horse became frightened at a bicycle ridden by Charles Rawson.

The animal swerved suddenly and ran between a tree and fence opposite Michael Flynn's residence, and in a few seconds Faragher fell from the buggy backwards. The unfortunate man received immediate attention from many persons who witnessed the accident, and physicians summoned.

Dr. Reffy examined the body, and is of the opinion that death was caused by a blow on the side of the neck, supposed to have been inflicted by striking the wheel when Faragher was thrown to one side by the concussion of the buggy against the tree or fence.

Other injuries were sustained, and death must have been almost instataneous. The remains were conveyed home the following morning and funeral services were held on Sunday, 2 PM. Deceased, age 57, was a farmer and well-known in this vicinity.

419. Newspaper Article, "Engineer Misses Last Run Farewell-Train Was Late", Thomas W. Claubaugh Sr., Catawba Island, made his last run on the New York Central's New England States Limited last night, but a delay thwarted a planned farewell here by his family.

Claughbaugh's relatives planned to line up on the Hayes Avenue subway and wave the engineer by; but the States was running nearly an hour late yesterday, and darkness blacked out the greeting.

Ironically it was the first time in years that Claubaugh has been late. Claubaugh is the last engineer on the NYC to have the Vanderbilt pension which went only to passenger engineers employed by the old Lake Shore Railroad, a predecessor of the NYC.

Claubaugh had been with the Lake Shore three years before it became the NYC in 1915. He has been running passengers 10 years on such trains as the States in addition to the Twentieth Century. He was a fireman for 28 years.

623. Newspaper Article, The Trojan Times (School Newspaper for Baptist Christian School) March, 1980 Cleveland, OH, Pacholke Profile-Who do you know that used to be a 9th grade cheerleader, was editor and chief of both the yearbook and school newspaper, and "Tried to play the flute" in the marching band ? Jackie Schmittel! Who?

Well, she's better known to most of us as Mrs. Pacholke. She was an enthusiastically involved student at North High. In addition to the activities mentioned above, Mrs. Pacholke was also the student director of three major high school plays.

She was a member of National Honor Society, the choir, the Girls Athletic League, and the Friendship Club. After graduation Mrs. Pacholke attended Bowling Green State University. She was transformed from Jackie Schmittel to Mrs. Pacholke at age 22.

Before coming to BCS, she taught the younger students at Willo-Hill Christian School. With thanks to both Miss Taylor and Scott Toth, Mrs. Pacholke came to be the Librarian and to teach English here at BCS.

Scott was a student at Willo-Hill when she taught there, and he mentioned to her that the Upper School was in need of an English teacher. She obtained more information from Miss Taylor, who happens to be her first cousin, twice removed. (You can ask one of therm to explain it!)

This is Mrs. Pacholke's first year here and she hopes to stay at BCS for a long time. She was born on an Airforce Base in Rantoul, Illinois, where her father was stationed. From her youth she traveled quite a bit, but grew up mainly in Eastlake, which is where she and her husband, Vern, have recently purchased a new home.

Mr. Pacholke races motorcycles and works at H & H Cycle, which his father owns. Mr. and Mrs. Pacholke hope to have children, but for now, Bul, their dog will have to do. Bul had a companion who was named Taco, which only you motocycle buffs will understand. Mrs. Pacholke is indeed one of our more fun-loving Christian teachers. (Picture of Jackie Pacholke).

On Snowblowers: "Probably the No 1 problem we see with snowblowers is the fuel. Historically, the problem has been that it sits in the corner with the same gas in it all spring and summer. In hot weather, gas evaporates to a point and you get residue and varnish. Come next fall they can't start them."

On Lawnmowers: "Come spring , it will be lawnmowers and this will be the year for that. Our govewrnment , with its illustrious wisdom, mandated that no more grass clippings be introduced into any landfill. The bagging lawnmowers we all knew will be gone for all practical purposes. A mower that mulches the grass will be the way to go."
