Bird flu -- should we prepare now?

Bird Flu Hygiene Kit®

French Creek Medical Price: $65.95

Description:

Periodically, devastating strains of the influenza virus spread through the world's population. The well known Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919 was followed by the Asian Flu of 1957 and the Hong Kong Flu of 1968. Currently, health officials are alarmed by the spread of a virus known as H5N1.

The virus is carried by birds, both domestic and wild. It appears that in Asia, humans have become infected with H5N1 by exposure to sick or dead poultry. So far, the virus does not seem capable of traveling from human to human with ease.

Take Precautions!

The most direct way to avoid being infected with a deadly virus, should an outbreak occur, is to limit contact with other people. Send only one family member out to gather food and supplies. This person should wear protective clothing such as a mask and exam gloves. Clothes should be changed away from the living area. A bird flu kit may be prepared in a variety of ways. There are many approaches to preparedness and preparation. The Bird Flu Hygiene Kit® is just one way to prepare.

    In conclusion:

The influenza pandemic of 1918-19 was so horrific that when it was over, the survivors spoke very little of their experiences. They were unaware that the illness was caused by a virus, an entity so small, no microscope of their time could detect it.

Today we can avoid being caught off guard. Stocking simple barrier and sanitation products is the first step to staying healthy. A bird flu kit is one way to prepare.

The concept of the Bird Flu Hygiene Kit® was developed by Carla Wible, wife of Tom Wible and Science Teacher at Olmsted Falls High School. Carla Wible had read several scientific journal articles about developments concerning bird flu. It is her thought that individuals should educate themselves about the eventuality of a pandemic of some strain - even if it is different from the bird flu. She noted the lesson of Hurricane Katrina that should not be forgotten: Every citizen should have a well thought-out emergency plan in place and have supplies on hand to deal with such a crisis.

The Bird Flu Hygiene Kit® was a natural fit for French Creek Medical's existing product line which includes surgical hand disinfectants as well as antimicrobial scrubs, lab jackets and medical apparel that meets the OSHA definition of "Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment".

NEWS ARTICLE from The Press, 1-18-06, By Julie A. Short

``Local company creates, sells Bird Flu Hygiene Kit®

AVON -- One local company is making sure that people all over the country are prepared should an outbreak of the Bird Flu occur. French Creek Medical, a manufacturer representative of medical equipment and supplies in Avon, is offering Bird Flu Hygiene kits for $65.95.

The concept for the kit was developed by the wife of French Creek Medical's President, Tom Wible. She had read several scientific journal articles about developments concerning the bird flu. It was her thought that individuals should educate themselves about the possibility of a pandemic of some strain, even if it is different from the bird flu.

Birds, both domestic and wild, carry the virus. In Asia, humans have become infected with the virus, also known as avian influenza or H5N1, by exposure to sick or dead poultry. Bird flu viruses do not usually infect humans, but more than 100 confirmed cases of human infection with bird flu viruses have occurred since 1997.

The World Health Organization (WHO) maintains situation updates and cumulative reports of human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most cases of avian influenza infection in humans have resulted from direct or close contact with infected poultry (e.g., domesticated chicken, ducks and turkeys) or surfaces contaminated with secretions and excretions from infected birds. The spread of avian influenza viruses from an ill person to another person has been reported very rarely, and transmission has not been observed to continue beyond one person.

During an outbreak of avian influenza among poultry, there is a possible risk to people who have direct or close contact with infected birds or with surfaces that have been contaminated with secretions and excretions from infected birds. "The most direct way to avoid being infected with a deadly virus, should an outbreak occur, is to limit contact with other people," Wible said.

"Send only one family member out to gather food and supplies. This person should wear protective clothing such as a mask and exam gloves. Clothes should be changed away from the living area. A bird flu kit may be prepared in a variety of ways. There are many approaches to preparedness and preparation. The kit is just one way to prepare."

French Creek Medical, which Wible operates out of his home, has assembled the kit which includes Sani-Dex(®) ALC Antimicrobial Alcohol Hand Wipes, Quick-Pull Canister, 135 wipes; vinyl exam gloves, powder-free, box of 100 choose your glove size: small, medium, or large; Sani-Dex antimicrobial alcohol hand wipes, pocket packets, box of 100; 3M health care N95 particulate respirator and surgical mask, box of 20 and Integra safety glasses, one pair.

"We've been offering the kits for about a week and have already had several families purchase them," Wible said. "We've been advertising the information on Google (pay per click), as well as brochures we mail with our invoices. Our company distributes physical therapy supplies, chiropractic supplies, consumables, apparel, scrubs, etc. Seventy-five percent of our customers are medical professionals, with the other 25 percent being patient end users. All of our items are available for the general public."''

NEWS ARTICLE from The Plain Dealer, 2-3-06, by Carl Matzelle, Plain Dealer Reporter

[Bird flu -- should we prepare now?]

``AVON -- Calm your fears about the bird flu. Protection is as close as your keyboard.

For example, a small medical-supply company in Avon is selling a Bird Flu Hygiene Kit® on the Internet. Included are synthetic gloves, a surgical mask, protective glasses and sanitary wipes. Cost: $65.95, with free shipping.

The business owner has sold about two-dozen kits and insists he's not trying to exploit anyone. But plenty of Web sites are popping up to cash in on people's fears.

"People get worried and buy things they might not really need because they feel like they're losing control of their lives," said Joydeep Srivastava, associate professor of marketing at the University of Maryland.

The avian flu, caused by the H5N1 virus, has killed more than 75 people in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. There is no vaccine, but the spread of H5N1 between people is almost unheard of. The virus is considered dangerous because it could spread "efficiently and sustainably" if it mutates, according to the World Health Organization.

Will it reach the United States . . . and when? "I don't think anybody knows for sure," said Dr. Mo Saif, director of the Ohio State University Animal Health Research Program ...

Then will surgical masks and hand wipes help, or are they for the birds? The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says those precautions can't hurt you ...

Tom Wible, president of French Creek Medical in Avon, said he and his wife, Carla, have been selling medical supplies from their home since 2003.

He said people would need the Bird Flu Hygiene Kit if they had to venture outdoors during a pandemic outbreak. His Web site advises: "Send only one family member out to gather food and supplies. This person should wear protective clothing such as a mask [the elite N95 Surgical Mask - NOT AVAILABLE TILL FURTHER NOTICE from 3M] and exam gloves."

Wible says he sells sensible precautions ... "The items help to protect against contamination and aren't being promoted as a cure, and they're affordable."

Some Web sites make the flu threat sound imminent. "A pandemic could last 12-24 months," warns the Web site for Health Protection Solutions ... It quotes analysts cautioning that masks and other protective materials would be in short supply ...

Plan for Flu, a site from Dallas, announces that "each day the possibility of a bird flu pandemic comes dangerously closer ... Please be aware there is no guarantee these items will be available if 'things get worse.'" Plan for Flu sells air purifiers ($129.95), masks (10 for $28.95), emergency radios ($124.95) and lithium flashlights ($28.95).

Wible's Bird Flu Kit, sells for $65.95 plus tax ...''
